- PIRGs started in the 1970s when activist Ralph Nader spoke on college campuses advocating greater student involvement in public affairs. Since then, PIRGs across the U.S. and Canada have trained student and citizen activists around the country to seek progressive social change in the areas of environment, labour, human rights, equality, and democracy.
