- Pamela Simonson and Jay Gardner started P.J.'s Canvas & Sail Shop in 1978 in a tiny loft at the Napa Valley Marina. For the first 5 years the work was primarily sailmaking and custom boat canvas. This honed the skills of Pam and Jay because the boat canvas and sailing customers are both notoriously "discriminating" in their evaluation of good workmanship. By 1983 they had completed some of their first commercial jobs, a Tension Structure for Scandia Fun Center in Sacramento and 2 large Tension Structures for the Settling Ponds at Napa Sanitation District.
