The Navajo rugs shown on these pages were purchased over the years from the Crownpoint Rug Weavers Association, which holds a monthly auction in northwest New Mexico. Navajo rugs are unique. Each one is woven by hand on the vertical Navajo loom. The weaver must plan the design of the entire rug carefully; the edges are completed first and there is no ability to "add on" haphazardly later! If the original design is ill-conceived, nothing can be done about it once the weaving is underway.
