History

The history of the company dates back to 1852 when the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company founded in Pittsburgh. The company established its corporate office at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Wood Street in Pittsburgh where it remains to this day. After a series of mergers, the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company evolved into the Pittsburgh National Corporation in the year 1959. The Philadelphia based Provident National Corporation, whose origins date back to the mid-19th century is another branch of the current bank. In 1982, Pittsburgh National Corporation and Provident National Corporation merged to give way to PNC Financial Corporation. The corporation purchased more than ten smaller banks and broadened its market base from Kentucky to the Greater New York Metro area between 1991 and 1996. In the year 2005, PNC acquired Riggs National Corporation based in Washington, D.C. Eventually, Maryland-based Mercantile Bankshares was acquired in 2007. In the same year, the pending acquisition of Yardville National Bancorp, a small commercial bank centered in central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania was also completed. With some of these largest mergers, the company has emerged as the 11th largest bank by deposits in the United States.
