Penrith Netcom commenced operation in November 1994, when 18 year old university student Luke Mackinnon, sick of paying STD rates to connect to the Internet, decided that Penrith needed a local ISP, and that he was to be the Director! At this stage it was Luke's intention to gain only a handful of customers, and use the profits from those customers to subsidise the cost of his own connection to the Internet.
Luke spent the next 5 months setting up all the necessary servers and equipment, part time at Penrith Netcom, whilst still studying Computer Science at Sydney University. By late 1995, Penrith Netcom had grown in leaps and bounds, and Luke realised that it now required his full time attention. He deferred from University, and moved Penrith Netcom to bigger premises in Emu Plains.
It became obvious very quickly that there was a big demand for a local ISP in the Penrith area. Penrith Netcom continued to grow at a rapid rate, which is when Luke decided he needed help. In October 1996 he called on his Uncle, Mike Corr, our current Financial Controller, for help in running the business during its teething stages. It was Mike's intention to work for Penrith Netcom until it was off the ground, and then return to semi retirement. Mike is still with us today, and is an integral part of our organisation!
