Title

PointServers.org - Vision & Opinion: Ubiquitous Computing & Pervasive Wireless. Point Servers, Bluetooth, WiMedia, Point Server Application Infrastructure.

Description

PointServers.org is . . .

The principal source for information about the key new trend for human-centric computing and short-range wireless networks: Point Servers. These are the software & hardware infrastructure that enable ever-present, seamless user computing environments. Point servers will become a primary computing platform within this decade.

Why PointServers.org?

Recent advances in electronic components have removed the last technical barriers to achieving truly human-centric computing, that is as indispensable and widespread as pen/paper or printed text. Few in the IT industry realize this yet. Many IT vendors are simply hoping that maturing markets for their products will return to emerging-market growth rates, while others imagine that the entire IT market is mature and have virtually abandoned the search for new markets. Now is the moment for new thought leaders to step into this vision breach, and guide the industry to the truly usable model of computing it has long promised.

We call this model continuous computing. Its user experience is transparent, natural, contextual, always within reach, and constantly in use. Such an environment does not depend, as some believe, on pervasive wireless Internet access, nor extensively enhanced work and living spaces. The key factors enabling this model are point servers, which provide mobile and/or local platforms for continuous computing applications, and short-range wireless networks, which enable connectivity between a point server and data appliances. Continuous computing draws on ideas from the field of ubiquitous/pervasive computing, an area of research for over a decade. (See also our summary of ubiquitous computing trends.)
