Description

As the largest art museum in the state of Maine, the Portland Museum of Art serves as a vital cultural resource for all who visit. The Museum's collection of more than 15,000 objects is housed in three historic and remarkable buildings showcasing three centuries of art and architecture. With our constantly changing exhibitions and newly reinstalled permanent collection, a diverse selection of fine and decorative arts is always on view.

This summer's blockbuster exhibition features the dazzling works of French painters. Paris and the Countryside: Modern Life in Late-19th-Century France, on view through October 15, explores what a modern life, in its many facets, meant during that era in France, along with the array of artistic responses to it. Developments in science and industry such as photography and modes of transportation were influential in the creation of art and the choice of subject material, as was the growing importance of leisure activities including urban cafés, art shows, fashion, dance halls, and travel to the countryside and coastal resorts. Works by Impressionist artists Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Auguste Renoir, among others, are shown, along with paintings and prints by Post-Impressionist artists such as Émile Bernard, Georges Seurat, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh.

The Quiet Landscapes of William B. Post, on view through August 27, highlights the work of Maine photographer William B. Post, who excelled at photographing the rural landscape near his home in Fryeburg. His pictures, dated from about 1890 to 1910, are both sophisticated and understated, often showing the influence of Japanese art. As an accompaniment, a selection of pictorialist photographs from our permanent collection are on view, including pieces by a number of accomplished art photographers active in Maine whose work has long been overlooked.
