First a little history lesson - The Zook’s Harley-Davidson story started with the doors opening on February 20, 1981, at 608 Nebraska Avenue in Columbia, Missouri. The original franchise agreement was signed with American Machine and Foundry (AMF). In the fall of 1984 Zook’s Harley-Davidson bought out Mathews Harley-Davidson of Des Moines, Iowa. The Columbia operation was closed January 16th, 1985 and moved in its entirety to Des Moines with a 43’ semi, a 22’ rental truck, and 9 trips with a 16’ tandem horse trailer. The first location was at 5820 NW 2nd Avenue in a building that was one-fourth the size of our current Service Department. The next move was to 105 East Euclid in October of 1986. In January of 1993 we took occupancy of our third location at NE 14th. This facility had a total of 18,192 square feet and was located at Exit 136 off of I-80 in Des Moines, Iowa. To the east of the building stood a 200 square foot Bar and Shield™ sign 65 feet in the air.
At the close of business on Saturday, March 6, 2004, we closed our NE 14th St. store and three days later opened our current facility at exit 135 off I-80 in Des Moines, Iowa. It has been a long and interesting trip but we are back on 2nd Ave. in a building that is nearly 10 times the size of our original building in Iowa selling 20 times the number of motorcycles. We have grown to be the largest New Vehicle Dealer between Chicago and Denver.
Zook broke ground on this facility, which is just over 45,000 sq. ft., during the year of the 100th Anniversary celebration on August 28, 2003. Zook’s is proud to be in the heart of Iowa and represent the Midwest values and work ethic that has made Harley-Davidson® an American Dream.
