Description
One of our most valuable hardwoods is supplied by Wild Black and Wild Red Cherry. It is strong, fine-grained, and takes a beautiful polish. Somewhat scarce, it brings a high price. It is used for interior finish, furniture, cabinetwork, instrument cases and clocks.
White Oak is the most prized of the oaks. It is hard, strong, seasons well, and polishes nicely. Some of its uses are for furniture, cabinetwork, ties, flooring, and veneers. Other oaks that can be used for the same purpose are Burr, Post, Rock, Swamp White, Cow, and Live Oaks. Red Oak is used for some of the same purposes but is not as hard or durable. This is also true of others known as Red Oaks--the Scarlet, Pin, Black, Spanish, and Water Oaks.
Mahogany has a reddish tone that deepens over the years. It is a light but strong wood with a straight and even grain. It shaves well and will take extremely fine detail. Used in furniture making, veneers, carving, and turn work.
