Princeton University was originally founded as the College of New Jersey in 1746. Its original location was Elizabeth and it was moved to Princeton in 1756. During the American Revolution, a battle was fought near Princeton. After the Declaration of Independence, the First Continental Congress met at a building that was to become part of Princeton University, and it served as the nation's capitol for four months. The university’s current name was given to it in 1896 along with official recognition as a university.

In 1887, Princeton University had a sister college for women, which was was merged with the rest of the university in 1969. At present, Princeton is a private university offering undergraduate as well as master's, doctorate and and professional degree programs. Princeton University is a member of the Ivy League. The university has no religious affiliation.

Degree Programs Offered

Princeton offers Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees. It is well-regarded for postgraduate degree programs in astronomy, history, political science, physics and mathematics. Professional degree programs include architecture and engineering. Princeton does not offer professional education in law, business or medicine.

Students participate in athletics, cultural, social and educational activities along with the faculty and staff. There are many societies that represent different communities and each community member can engage in many activities to express himself. Nearly all students live on campus.
