QUALCOMM

Qualcomm is a telecommunication company established in 1985 in San Diego, California, mostly dealing with the wireless communication segment. Its strong performance over the years has finally reached mainstream acknowledgement once the company entered the prestigious Fortune 500 list.

Website

Qualcomm.com is perhaps the finest possible example of how complex communication technology has become in terms of the markets involved. The website itself is a fine balancing act between no less than 9 different communities, each of critical importance to the company’s success. You have the potential employees, followed by the manufacturing partners, you have the investors, followed by the individual customers, you have the application developers for the platforms that the company sells and you have the network operators who allow such sales to begin with. Spice up this image with a few government and large corporate contracts and you will quickly realize the tremendous multi market aspect that the telecommunication industry faces today. The main focus though is put on the technological solutions that the company has to offer and the innovation that Qualcomm proudly boasts.

Going beyond this image however, qualcomm.com follows exactly the corporate web design standards you would expect and does it so quite thoroughly, although these sections come only as a marginal aspect.

History

Back in 1985 seven industry veterans decided to build “QUALity COMMunications” and sketched a plan which proved successful 20 years later. Their main plan was to involve themselves into the then emerging wireless communication market.

The company first provided contract research and development services for the wireless telecommunication market, which still makes up most of the company’s contract portfolio to date. Their first product was the Omni Tracs satellite locating service which ultimately became and still is currently the largest satellite based commercial mobile system for the trucking companies. After this success the company begun to produce CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cell phones making a revolutionary step and history in the wireless communications field.

Amongst their achievements there can also be mentioned their participation in the manufacture of the Globalstar satellite and the affiliation with Technicolor to develop a digital cinema system. The company now owns an astonishing 5,100 US patents and patent applications for the CDMA field alone and had a net income for 2006 of 2.47 billion dollars.

Impact

As with all modern telecommunication companies, Qualcomm is usually unknown in the mind of average people. This situation changes though once you begin to get close to the tech enthusiasts circle. While software and hardware companies that sell their products mostly to individuals are well known and respected, companies like Qualcomm, those that truly innovate are more prone to be known through their impact within the industries they collaborate with. The CDMA technology, in which Qualcomm was a pioneer and still is to this date is perhaps a glaring example of this phenomenon. Also the relatively specialized industry in which the company activates, makes this phenomenon even more intense, despite the fact that wireless communications is widely regarded nowadays as a buzz phrase.
