Description

There was, for a while, an online photo album where AS3 folks could --and did-- upload their own pictures. It allowed us to associate a face with a name we knew from the newsgroup. When you've spent months reading someone's cries for help, personal anecdotes or practical advice, they become far more than lines of text in a box. You get a sense of their personalities via their writing, their sense of humor, their style. The little photo site disappeared very suddenly one day. People missed it, and since I had a lot of free time, I tried to create something to replace it. As I channeled my nervous energy into concocting something, people sent in their pictures and I added pages of material and doctored graphics I thought might help distract you from the essentially grim business of overcoming an addiction. I figured that any minute spent chuckling was a minute not spent agonizing over your quit. A lot of people seemed to agree, and to find the pages useful. Herewith, then, a little history and a little information about this site.

Incarnation #1 involved using my own, personal web space-- the minuscule allotment that comes from any ISP along with your monthly service fee. It proved so successful that my ISP promptly shut me down, saying I'd exceeded my bandwidth limit for the month in just 3 days. They don't tell you that if you get too much traffic, they'll pull the plug. This was in May, 2000.

Incarnation #2: Elle (Redpaint59) and Dave (er...Dave), offered me space on their commercial server, which had no restrictions on the traffic the ISP would allow. As of June 12, 2000, Quit Buddies was off and running again. I changed the look several times, tinkering and learning about design and graphics as I went. Eventually, when their business demands more space on their server, I had to pack up and find a new home.
