The RACT is Tasmania’s leading service organisation, offering an enormous range of services based on the guiding principles of support, security, safety and service. The Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania (RACT), was established in 1923 to represent the interests of Tasmanian motorists. Our genesis was the motor car – one of the defining technologies of the 20th century. It transformed our cities, revolutionised our way of living, gave us previously unheard of mobility and, in doing so, presented us with new issues of safety. From helping motorists prepare their cars for the sea passage across Bass Strait in the 1930s, to assisting Tasmanians deal with Melbourne's e-tag tollways, the RACT has built its reputation by giving Tasmanians the means to take control of the awesome change the motor car represented in the 20th century. In a century when people became more mobile than ever before, we were there to help. Then, when our swelling membership wanted a new service they could trust – from finance to travel – we listened to and met their needs. Today, the RACT’s relevance to the community is greater than ever. What other service organisation can claim about one quarter of the state's population as fee-paying members? And what other Tasmanian organisation can boast of a total membership exceeding 114,000 members with over 100 people who have been continuous members for over 50 years, and another 20,000 Tasmanians who have been members for more than 25 years? Best of all: we're a wholly Tasmanian success story. While others may try to administer their Tasmanian interests from an interstate boardroom, we're here, on the ground, with a presence in every community in the state. We are an organisation created by Tasmanians to service and support Tasmanians. We're here for the long haul and we're here to help.
