Gulf Coast Reconstruction Watch is a project to document and investigate the rebuilding of the Southern Gulf in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Through original reporting, in-depth features, voices from community leaders, and other unique coverage, Watch aims to promote a more democratic and accountable reconstruction in the South. Gulf Coast Reconstruction Watch is a project of the Institute for Southern Studies, a non-profit research and education center, and the Institute’s flagship magazine, Southern Exposure.

Founded in 1970 by civil rights veterans, the Institute has established a national reputation as an essential resource for grassroots activists, community leaders, scholars, policy makers and others working to bring lasting social and economic change to the region. The Institute combines research, media and organizing programs to promote a democratic, just and sustainable future in the South.

Southern Exposure has earned a national reputation for its in-depth investigative reporting, unique portraits of Southern life, and resources for community change. It has garnered dozens of prestigious awards, including the National Magazine Award for Public Interest Reporting, the John Hancock Award for Business and Financial Journalism, and most recently the George Polk Award for Magazine Reporting.
