About the Authority

The Removal Review Authority is an independent judicial body established in 1991 under the New Zealand Immigration Act 1987 (the Immigration Act).

The Removal Review Authority consists of members who are barristers or solicitors of the High Court and who have held practising certificates for at least five years. Members are appointed by the Governor-General on the advice of the Minister of Immigration. For the purpose of determining any appeal before it, the Removal Review Authority consists of one member.

Function of the Removal Review Authority

The function of the Removal Review Authority is to consider on the papers and decide appeals brought under section 47 of the Immigration Act against the requirement for a person who is unlawfully in New Zealand to leave New Zealand.
