- Before dawn the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were dropped behind Utah Beach to secure four causeways across flooded plains to protect the invasion's west flank. The 82nd Airborne consisted of three parachute regiments and one regiment of airborne infantry landing in gliders. These regiments were to drop west of the 101st Airborne on either side of the Meredet River, and secure the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise.
