What It Is

The Resource-Zone (RZ) is the Open Directory Project Public Forum. Sponsored, administered, and moderated by members of the ODP Community, its purpose is dissemination of information to the public about The Open Directory Project and discussion of ODP-related issues.

Excerpted from the website:

  • This forum is here to provide an additional, unofficial channel of communications between the general public and the editing community, where advice on site suggestions and placement, becoming an editor, and other information about the directory can be dispensed.
  • In order to make this a success, some guidelines and a certain level of moderation is needed such that the discussion generates positive results, and that all discussions are as civil as possible. Remember that the success of this forum is dependent on the goodwill and support of the editing community. However, please note that the contents of these postings may not necessarily reflect official policy.

Many new forum members have similar questions, therefore answers to FAQsabout the ODP and Resource-Zone are provided at the top of every forum page.

Communication and Posting Guidelinesare also available to further clarify the purpose of Resource-Zone, the forums, good and bad topics, general codes of conduct, use of hypertext links, editor-specific posting guidelines, moderation, and disciplinary action.

Acceptable Topics

Acceptable topics include, but are not limited to:

  • General listing advice.
  • Who uses ODP data?
  • How to use ODP data on your site.
  • The category structure of ODP.
  • Are sites listed differently depending on the category in which they are listed?
  • Some sites get listed multiple times, others don't. Why?

What It Isn't

While a common misconception, Resource-Zone is not a site promotion tool or site review service. Editors will not discuss specific sites, provide status of suggested sites, or expedite site listings based on RZ conversations. Resource Zone was not designed to promote discussion of how and when other sites update or optimize their usage of ODP data.

Unacceptable Topics

The following, and similar, topics are outside the design and scope of Resource-Zone.com and will not be discussed:

  • Specific complaints about being removed as an editor.
  • Complaints about specific people working or volunteering their time at ODP.
  • Discussion of the ways in which ODP runs itself.
  • Discussion of any confidential information by current, or past, ODP editors.
  • Discussion of how to use the ODP to optimize search engine rankings and site promotion.
  • Discussion of editing issues - these should be discussed in the editor forums, not in the public forum.
  • Discussion of ways to circumvent or violate official DMOZ policy.
  • Discussion of your "Freedom of Speech" rights.
