Welcome To Ridgemount

Description

When Nancy (BSN Northwestern '56) taught nursing in Wisconsin, New York, and North Carolina we found dogs sufficient as a hobby. Now that we are both retired from teaching we have concentrated on cats and find them much easier to cope with and even more enjoyable in a different way. Gerry (BA Yale '52; B.Music University of Dubuque '57; Ph.D. Wisconsin-Madison '69) was a professor at Buffalo State College and more recently at a nearby small Presbyterian college east of Asheville, NC, Warren Wilson College, and now has retired from public school teaching elementary and middle school French. We have five children. several of whom are married and live close by. The grandchildren assist in socializing the kittens.

We bred schnauzers for almost thirty years in a very small way--but not since we moved to North Carolina. We had limited ourselves to a pair of giant schnauzers, When Nancy was younger she was allergic to cats. Either maturity or the nature of the short hair cats has done away with her allergies. Since in the past there have been as many as twenty kittens and cats around it was important that allergies were not a problem.

The cats, as part of our family, are good travelers. Several go along in our motor home camper whenever we go and some usually go with us when we drive around the back mountain roads up into the Pisgah National Forest, or along the Blue Ridge Parkway a few minutes from our home. Until we gave up being snowbirds ( six months in NC and six in Florida) we would take the entire cattery to our winter residence on Sanibel Island, Florida. They are a center of attention when we take them to local nursing homes.
