Rule of Law Initiative/Global Human Rights Training and Support
edit Description
Freedom House is the lead institution in the RIGHTS Consortium, providing expertise in rule of law and human rights training, research and analytical projects, and small grants management. Founded in 1941, Freedom House systematically assesses the progress and decline of political rights and civil liberties in 191 countries and 60 related territories through its Freedom in the World survey project. In addition, Freedom House manages a large portfolio of democratization programs, including U.S.-based and regional training and networking activities. It also provides on-site technical and managerial assistance to government agencies, the business sector, non-governmental organizations, and independent media to promote democratic transition and market reforms.
The American Bar Association's Central and East European Initiative (ABA/CEELI) coordinates the resources of the ABA's 23 substantive sections with its own established technical resources, which include offices in 23 countries and a network of more than 5,000 pro bono American and Western European experts, to provide state of the art legal expertise. Since 1990, ABA/CEELI has organized hundreds of interactive training workshops, helped to establish judicial training centers and public advocacy centers, and analyzed more than 400 draft laws, including 18 draft constitutions. Through the efforts of pro bono legal experts, ABA/CEELI helps to build the legal infrastructure that is indispensable to strong, self-supporting democratic, free market systems.
The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) offers 15 years of experience in democracy-building in more than 60 countries and currently has 40 offices around the world. Drawing on a global network of volunteer experts, NDI provides practical assistance to build political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and promote citizen participation, openness, and accountability in government. NDI is expert in designing and implementing civic education and advocacy projects on political and legal rights and in assisting with the development of good governance laws and practices, particularly in the area of anti-corruption and transparency, and constitutional and election reform.
