- While it’s easy to see why so many progressives would respect the anti-immigrant conservative Ron Paul’s opposition to the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act, it’s a little more difficult to figure out why anybody on the left would support his run for president. After all, why not just ignore Ron Paul altogether and get behind Dennis Kucinich? Kucinich, a feisty left populist congressman from the Midwest, has not only voted against the occupation of Iraq and the Patriot Act, he’s also introduced articles of impeachment against Dick Cheney in Congress. He has none of Ron Paul’s retrograde nativism, none of Paul’s racist or anti-semitic followers, and, unlike Paul, he actually showed up to vote “no” on HR 1955, Jane Harman’s egregious “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007”. In fact, Dennis Kucinich has been such a consistently progressive and courageously iconoclastic voice in Congress that it’s sometimes almost impossible to figure out why he isn’t the clearly acknowledged leader of the anti-war left inside the Democratic Party.
