Roundtable - Producing Media for Public Engagement

Description

Roundtable specializes in producing media for public engagement on important social issues. We also produce high-profile multimedia educational projects on issues of diversity, democracy, journalism, civil society and social justice.

Roundtable has launched public-engagement campaigns in conjunction with many media projects, including: School: The Story of American Public Education; Local News… One Station Fights the Odds; Senior Year; and its own production, The College Track: America’s Sorting Machine.

Robert Lavelle and Martha Fowlkes founded Roundtable in 1999 after working for many years at the documentary media company Blackside, Inc. Over the course of a dozen years, from the broadcast of the multiple award-winning Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years onward, Lavelle and Fowlkes witnessed a diminution in the power of the media to serve as a catalyst for deliberative discussion and positive social change. They saw a need, also noted by social scientists, to find new methods of bringing an increasingly fragmented public together for substantive, face-to-face deliberation on important social issues. It became clear to Lavelle and Fowlkes that if people converse at all about important social issues today, they do so almost exclusively with like-minded citizens. As its name implies, Roundtable was established explicitly to use media in all forms — print, video, digital — to bring ideologically, economically, ethnically and racially diverse citizens together to discuss and initiate systemic and practical change in modern society.
