1979- A battered woman in Johnson County escapes her abusive husband by fleeing to a neighbor's home. The neighbor, Martha Hunt, enlists community members to help organize services for battered women and their children in Johnson County.

1980-The Johnson County Association for Battered Persons becomes an incorporated not-for-profit organization. The next year the first Executive Director is hired and the first volunteer training is held.

1984- SAFEHOME opens Johnson County's first shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children. The shelter, at the time, housed 15 women and children and is full the first night.
