Description
The transfer of the Airport from the San Diego Unified Port District to the Airport Authority on January 1, 2003 marked the beginning of the Authority's tenure as owner/operator of San Diego International Airport.
Envisioned as an agile, innovative organization, the Authority was created as a new approach to solving a long-term challenge — aviation transportation planning on a region-wide basis.
As a public entity created by state law (California Public Utilities Code §§170000-170084, Division 17, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3) to operate the Airport and plan for the region's future air transportation needs, the Authority completed its first year of operation as an independent agency in 2003.
