Title
San Juan County Fairgrounds and the San Juan County Washington Fair
Description
100 Years of Agriculture and Education
In 1906, San Juan islanders and guests gathered on the waterfront at the bottom of Spring Street to view the great exhibition of the first San Juan County Fair. Created under the auspices of the San Juan County Farm Bureau, the fair was officially opened with speeches and song. Citizens and guests alike were proud to participate, with 1025 tickets being sold and $302.50 collected in gate receipts. It was the beginning of a much loved island tradition.
The first fair represented all of the county’s varied resources: fruits, flowers, grains, grasses and livestock. Many prime examples of horses, cattle, sheep, swine and poultry, including turkeys, were shown. At the time, raising turkeys was a sideline industry of the islands and San Juan County was known as a poultry raising county.
A department called “Ladies Work” was a true inspiration with fine embroidery, tatting, quilting, rag rugs, patching and darning, hemstitching, painting and many more displays of sewing, working with fibers, arts and crafts and useful homemaking skills.
