On September 13, 2001 , Danny Lopes made his life long dream of continuing in the family business a reality by leasing the former Candy Apple Red location in Bethesda, Maryland. He began complete renovation, from floor to ceiling, turning the black and red All-American bar into a bright, welcoming café, opening the doors for business in June 2002.
Saphire Café was so-named after Lopes' mother, Margie, who owned and operated several Washington nightclubs and restaurants in the 1970's. It was her nickname, her friends will agree, she was known to always wear many jeweled rings and bracelets. The menu consists of modern American cuisine with international influences such as Thai, French, Italian, South American and Spanish.
Lopes and his partner, Charlie Ly, met at Legend's Café and Billiards in Wheaton, MD, which Ly owns and operates. Lopes began bartending there in 2000 and the two quickly became friends and started talking business. Danny shared his dream of one day having and running his own place and the rest just fell into place. Ly runs the kitchen at Saphire Café and Lopes manages the front of the house. At any given time, one of them can be seen running around the restaurant helping out their staff. They run their restaurants like one big family, everyone helping each other out.
