Title

Scrabble in New Zealand

Description

The NZASP is the umbrella organisation for organised Scrabble in NZ. There are 27 affiliated clubs and about 30 independent members. This represents a total of about 370 players.

NZ uses both The Chambers Dictionary and the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary as the word authorities (colloquially known as SOWPODS). We operate the five point penalty challenge rule, which means that when correct words are challenged the player who played the word(s) receives an additional five points for every word challenged. When incorrect words are challenged the player who played the word(s) loses his/her turn.

NZ has been represented by 4 players at each of the first four World Scrabble Championships, by 5 at Melbourne in 1999 and by 4 in 2001. The highest placing achieved was in 1995 when Jeff Grant came third.
