Title edit
Sea Urchin Harvesters Association
Description edit
California's sea urchin fishery began in the early 1970's in part to supply a growing demand for traditional Japanese cuisine in the United States. In those days sea urchins were considered pests, the bane of kelp harvesters and sports divers alike.
From those lowly beginings. California's sea urchin crop has risen to rank among California's most important fisheries. The dockside value of sea urchins surpassed all other fisheries from 1989 through 1995 and ran a close second to a record-breaking California market squid harvest in 1996. The export value of California's sea urchin fishery is estimated at more than $80 million a year. More than 75 percent of California's sea urchin catch is now exported to Japan.
In Japan, California red sea urchins are favored over other imports by the expensive sushi-bar trade. California sea urchins command respect from marketers worldwide. Although sea urchins are harvested around the world, our temperate climate and favorable ocean environment enable California urchin divers to bring in high-quality red sea urchins in the dead of winter, at the peak of the Japanese holiday season. In that respect California's sea urchin fishery is unique.
