edit Company

Sears Holdings Corporation is the United States' fourth-largest commercial retailer. It is the new company which was formed in 2005 from the merger of Sears, Roebuck and Company and Kmart Holdings Corporation. The corporation is based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Sears, Roebuck and Company was founded in 1886 in Chicago, Illinois and KMart was founded in 1899 in Detroit, Michigan.

edit Store Chains

The result of combining what were already two retail giants has produced a host of store chains under one large corporation. Their current line-up of retail chains include:

  • KMart - The familiar chain of discount department stores remains virtually unchanged. This chain of retail stores has been in continuous business since 1962, and still has their first store in Garden City, Michigan. The standard KMart stores focus on economically-priced small retail items: electronics, music, movies, bedding, hardware, sporting goods, clothing, toys, jewelry, office supplies, health and beauty products, home decorating items, and a limited selection of food items. Its chief competitor is Target stores.
  • Big Kmart - Larger than its name-sake, the Big KMart stores have more of a focus on home decorating items, housewares, and clothing. Most of these also have a garden center, pharmacy, and cafe, in addition to the smaller KMarts.
  • Super Kmart - These are the new breed of "multi-department stores", whose area typically covers 150,000 to 250,000 square feet. They combine a standard KMart with a complete grocery store, and most add anything from a large appliance section to a gas station as well. These chains have Walmart as their chief competitor.
  • Land's End - The clothing brand has a chain of several stand-alone stores, in addition to being sold directly through Sears stores.
  • Orchard Supply Hardware - While all 84 locations of these stores are in the state of California, Sears Holdings has indicated interest in expanding this chain in the future. These are home building and hardware goods stores, competing in markets currently dominated by Home Depot.
  • Sears - These are the familiar chains of mid-range department stores, which carry clothing, jewelry, appliances, hardware, lawn and garden supplies, sporting goods, office supplies, electronics, and home furnishings. They are typically found attached to shopping malls, and compete with other department store retailers like JC Penny and May Company.
  • Sears Grand - Similar to Super KMarts, these are a chain of stand-alone mega-stores which function as a standard Sears store combined with a large grocery store. These also run in the range of 150,000 to 250,000 square feet of floor space, and also are competing with Walmart.
  • Sears Hardware - Smaller hardware and general-store outlets; these are strip-mall sized stores carrying just the subset of Sears-brands hardware merchandise. Their chief competitor is the Ace Hardware stores.
  • Sears Dealer Stores - These are the smallest stores, more like independent franchises, where individual business owners sell Sears-branded merchandise.
  • Sears Outlet - Another smaller store, these are the kiosk-sized retail stores in the smaller outlet malls.
  • Sears Parts & Repair, Sears Service Center, Sears Home Central - These are parts and repair centers for servicing large appliances and hardware sold under one of the Sears brand names. A & E Factory Services is the mobile branch of this section, with repair vans equipped to provide in-home service.
  • The Great Indoors - This is a free-standing chain of retail outlets that focus on home decorating and furnishings. They are competing more on Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Ikea's turf.

edit Sears Holdings Brands

The combination of Sears and KMart put many brand names under one corporate roof. The major brands currently held by Sears Holdings include:

Craftsman, DieHard, Kenmore, Jaclyn Smith, Joe Boxer, Lands' End, Martha Stewart Everyday, Route 66, Sesame Street, Ty Pennington style, Personal Identity, Canyon River Blues, Covington, Winnie the Pooh, Structure, BobbyO, Apostrophe, Parallel, Latina Life, Two Hearts, Celestial Star, Simply Love, Promise Your Love, Galaxy, Protron, and LXI.

edit Website

SearsHoldings.com is a placid website which serves more as a pointer to Sears.com and KMart.com, reflecting the novelty of the corporate union. The site's sections are:

  • About SHC
  • About Us
  • Diversity
  • Community Relations
  • Press Releases
  • Investor Information
  • Corporate Governance
  • Brands

The focus at this time of writing is more on presenting the main facts about the corporation, with the indication that customers would be more likely to go to the website related to the individual retail outlet they wish to deal with.

edit Business Profile

Sears Holdings Corporation reported revenues of over $49 billion in 2006. They employ 355,000 people in their 3,800 retail locations. Fortune 500 rates them as #33.

Title

The title of a web page appears in search results as the link to that page. Learn more ...

Purpose

The title of a web page appears as a clickable link in search results and bookmarks. A descriptive, compelling home page title with relevant keywords can increase the number of people visiting the site.

Search Engines

Search engines view the text of the title tag as a strong indication of what the page is about. Accurate keywords in the title tag can help the page rank better in search results.

Length

A title tag should have fewer than 70 characters, including spaces. Major search engines won't display more than that.

Content

The title tag of your home page (and any other page on your site) should not contain the site’s domain name or URL. These will appear near the title in search results, so use your 70 characters to tell people what the page is about. The title tag should not contain any HTML, because it will be displayed incorrectly or not at all.

  • Good: This web page has a title tag.
  • Good: The title tag is a good length.

Meta Description

Search engines often use the meta description of a web page to describe it in search results. Learn more ...

Purpose

The meta description tells searchers what a web page is about. It is often displayed below the title in search results, and helps people decide if they want to visit that website.

Length

Search engines will read 200 to 250 characters, but usually display only 150, including spaces. The first 150 characters of the meta description should contain the most important keywords for that web page. Using fewer than 50 characters could mean you’re not saying enough about the page.

Content

The meta description should be engaging, and should include keywords that accurately reflect what visitors will find on the web page. The keywords should be the same ones that a site's potential customers are using to search. Include a site’s location if it is important.

  • Problem: The meta description is too long. It should have no more than 250 characters, including spaces.

H1 Headings

The H1 heading is an important sentence or phrase on a web page that quickly and clearly tells people and search engines what they can expect to find there. Learn more ...

Just one H1

In most cases, a web page should have just one H1 heading. Using multiple H1 headings is okay if that is a logical way to organize the page, but they should be used sparingly. That’s because search engines can view multiple H1 headings as an attempt to signal that all the content on a page is equally important, a tactic that’s seen as an attempt to game the search engine algorithms.

Purpose

Search engines look for an H1 heading to determine what a page is about. Human visitors do, too.

Content and placement

The H1 heading appears on the web page itself, unlike the page title, which people will see mostly in search results.

The H1 tag (which contains the H1 heading) is usually listed first among the other heading tags for a page. None of the major search engines, however, will penalize a site for listing H2 through H6 tags ahead of the H1 tag.

The H1 heading for a page should be different from its title. Each can target different important keywords for better SEO.

  • Warning: This page has more than one H1 heading. It should have just one.

Robots

Your website's robots.txt file can tell search engines to ignore parts of your site. Learn more ...

Purpose

Website owners usually use robots.txt to let search engines know which pages or sections of their site shouldn't be indexed — for example, web contact forms, print versions of web pages and other content that's duplicated elsewhere on the site. Robots.txt can also be used to request that specific robots not index a site. For more information, read How To Use Robots.txt.

Be careful!

If you're going to use robots.txt, be careful not to accidentally exclude search engines from pages you want people to find. To learn more, read Don't Block Search Engine Crawlers.

Search engine robots

You'll need to know the names of specific search engine robots - or "bots" – if you’re going to exclude any or all of them from any part of your site.

  • Google’s bot is called Googlebot. Google is the world’s largest search engine, and is where many people discover new websites.
  • Bing’s bot is called msnbot. Bing also provides search results to people using Yahoo to search the Web. Together, Bing and Yahoo are the second largest search resource, after Google.
  • Baidu’s bot is called Baiduspider. Baidu is a major search engine in China, and the number of people using it is increasing rapidly.
  • AboutUs.org’s bot is called AboutUsBot. To create a Site Report, AboutUs uses crawling technology that’s similar to what search engines use.
  • Good: This website’s robots.txt file is not blocking major search engines from crawling its pages. Your website can appear in any engine’s search results.

Canonical Url

This website can live at www.SearsHoldings.com or SearsHoldings.com. It's best for your site's visibility to live at just one URL, or web address. You'll want to create a 301 redirect to the URL you choose from the other URL. Learn more ...

Choose one or the other

Whichever of these URLs you choose, make sure your website lives ONLY at that location, which is called the canonical URL for your site.

Be careful!

If you choose www.MyWebsite.com for your site, make sure people who don't type www can get to your site, too. Create a permanent 301 redirect from MyWebsite.com to www.MyWebsite.com.

If the same web page exists at two different URLs, people can choose to link to one or the other. Links from other sites to your website are valuable — they tell search engines that your site is important to people. By splitting valuable links between two identical pages, you're diluting the power of those links to help a page rank higher in search results.

  • Problem: Your website resides at both www.SearsHoldings.com and SearsHoldings.com. You should permanently redirect one to the other, using a 301 redirect.
