Title

SCFAW - Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare

Description

Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare was organized in October of 2000 and incorporated as a Massachusetts based non-profit 501(c)3 in 2001. We are 80 volunteers strong, with no paid staff. Since 2001, we have spay/neutered over 4,500 cats, many homeless, either feral or lost or abandoned pets. Through our Quick Fix Clinic program alone, begun in June of 2002, we have reached over 2,500 pet cats. According to the MSPCA, 11% of all pet cats are not spayed or neutered. This appears to be a relatively small number, only 80,000 in Massachusetts. But once lost or abandoned, these 11% in the home become 66% of all homeless street cats or 300,000-500,000 cats! They breed like crazy for several years before the stress and peril of homelessness sadly overcomes them. Therefore we focus on spaying and neutering as many pet cats as possible to curtail homelessness before it starts. We believe this is the most effective way to end the suffering, by addressing the root cause.

The organization is led by Jan Beckwith, President and Founder, and advised by our Board of Directors, including James Bolger, DVM, owner of Clinton Veterinary Hospital and Stephen Beckwith, management consultant and team builder.

Armed with a trap and a desire to help, Jan started the group by trapping one cat in October of 2000. Having spent most of her career in the corporate world as an IT specialist and program manager, receiving her MBA from Bentley College in 1990, Jan left her corporate post in 2002 to put her talents to work fulltime. This allowed her more time to dedicate to leading the organization on its humane mission.
