Description

My name is Brooke, and I am a former self injurer. I am currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work at the Wilfrid Laurier Univeristy, as well as working for the Kitchener-Waterloo Sexual Assault Support Centre. I am also involved in a couple of research projects, as well as doing freelance website and computer consulting.

Over the past few years since I stopped self injuring, many people have expressed interest in having more information on this rarely discussed topic. I decided that my personal experience, as well as my theoretical knowledge, might help to increase public, professional and personal awareness about self injury. My hope is that by educating both those who self injure, as well as those who provide treatment, a reduction in the stigma and shame which surround this issue can be achieved.

Over the last two years I have done several public education presentations on the topic of self injury to various organizations, invluding the Kitchener Waterloo Sexual Assault Support Centre, Transitions for Youth, and the Niagara Region Sexual Assault Support Centre. I have also done presentations to self injurers, including youth at the Oakville Youth Development Centre, in order to provide them with a greater understanding of their own behaviour, and the possibility of changing.
