Description
Buddhism was founded in India some 2,500 years ago by Siddhartha Gautama, called the Buddha, and over the course of several centuries spread throughout Asia. Today Buddhism is one of the world's five principal religions, practiced around the globe.
Unlike most religions, Buddhism is nontheistic. It regards the Buddha not as a god to be worshiped but as a human being to be emulated – though an extraordinary human being, to be sure, who through his own effort attained the supreme form of human consciousness known as enlightenment. Asked if he was a god or a man, the Buddha said simply, "I am awake."
Buddhism holds that the causes of human suffering are the ego's craving and attachment – and that the cessation of suffering lies within an eightfold path of "right" (or "complete") practices such as right intentions, right speech, and right effort.
