SimShips.com is using 3D modelling to build ship models. These ship models are converted into files that maritime simulator games such as Virtual Sailor and Ship Simulator is using. The models are covered with textures based on the outside and the inside of the real ship. Some models are sophisticated 3D models that also contain interior.
In the game you can use a walk-trough mode to go trough the model or even walk on the decks. You can control the ships by using in-game controllers.

SimShips.com also makes scenarios for use in these games, so you can explore the ocean or even fjords and coast lines. The terrain in the scenario is based on the real world by using DEM/terrain data to render the landscape.
