In 2004 two clubs Calry Giants Basketball Club for boys and Sligo Warriors Basketball Club for girls have merged to form today's Sligo Giant Warriors Basketball Club.
The club was founded eleven years ago (1993) by a small and dedicated group of basketball enthusiasts that felt boys basketball in the area was not catered for adequately.
One of the main reasons was a desire to do well at Community Games. It was decided that a training programme was needed. The club was originally called Calry Boys Basketball Club and the first chairperson and only coach for the first two years was Mr. Pat Scanlon. He had experience of coaching a winning division 1 ladies basketball club in Dublin for two years 1980-1981. Mr. Ray McDaid is a highly experienced coach. He has made great efforts to develop the club and has achieved great success at underage coaching. His main area of interest is helping underage players to develop skills.
