- SM&P stands for Steve, Mike and Pat - it's that simple. These are the names of the three Baker brothers who purchased a Vermeer M-470 trencher and founded SM&P Construction Company in 1973. SM&P started out by burying cable for their first customer -- SBC (known at the time as Indiana Bell). Within a few years, SBC asked SM&P to locate and mark the very same cable they had buried, effectively catalyzing SM&P's evolution from a cable burying company to a cable locating company by 1979.
