the history of the smithklan
The Smithklan was founded by johnsmith in july of 1998. johnsmith said he chose the name johnsmith because thats the name that always showed up default in window98 when you were installing a program. he decided to call his group the smithclan because of that. he tried to buy the domain smithclan.com but a family with the last name of smith had already acquired it and used it as a site to post dates of family reunions, etc... so he saw that smithklan.com was available and he bought that domain instead. smith klan with a k instead of a c. which brought the stigma of everyone thinking that we were a racist hacking organization. almost daily someone would ask us on the message board or through icq or e-mail if we were racist. we assured them that we were. Other founding members include elijah smith, zeus smith, and sam smith. a few months later smokeydogg and virus! joined the smithklan ranks. on 1/7/99 the smithklan silencer debuted for download on smithklan.com. its features included Chat- Opens up a chat window on your´s & the server´s machine allowing the two to communicate, Send KeyStrokes- Forwards specified typed-in key sequences to the server, ICQPassJack- You enter the ICQ User Name of the user running the server & click Done. The server will show a ´fake´ ICQ Password Verification box. The client will later show whatever the server inputed in the password box, Run Program- Runs a specific program on the server´s machine, Send Msg- Shows a message box on the server´s machine with the message the client specified, Hide Taskbar- Hides the server´s Windows 95/98, taskbar Disable, Ctrl-Alt-Del- Disables the servers use of Ctrl-Alt-Del, Ping Pong Virus- Shows a ball bouncing around on the server´s machine The ball is always shown ´on top´ & can not be closed. This will also disable Ctrl-Alt-Del, Reboot- Reboots the servers machine, Run Screensaver- Runs the screensaver on the server´s machine, Show Shutdown Menu- Opens up the Shutdown Menu on the server´s machine. sam smith authored the program with help from johnsmith, smokeydogg, and virus!. in 3/99 gzphreak, a friend of smokeydogg's joined the smithklan and began working on a new silencer. New Silencer had a more user friendly interface, a lot more options, and a restart persistent server file. on 4/18/99 new silencer beta version was released and available for download on smithklan.com. though due to personal problems gzphreak was going through the final version of new silencer was never released. new silencer retained all of the features from the original silencer and added the ability to list a computers drives, find files, run files, and delete files. at the time the smithklan website consisted of a security program archive, the message forum, which was frequented by many members of the security underground, and a web based chat room where the members of the smithklan would meet and discuss future projects, or just hang out and joke and catch up with each other. by june of 2000 smithklan had still retained its security archive and message forum, but had since gotten rid of the web based chat room and everyone had begun meeting on efnet on irc in #smithklan instead. there also was a humor archive added and a page called hyperhack, whose function i can't remember currently. the members list had grown a lot by this time, with a few of the old members leaving the smithklan ranks as well. members at this time were johnsmith, smokeydogg, virus!, assid, mook, zeus, waar, guri, coredamage, mofo, bishun, cm, vanya, l0st, pete, mark, savecore, and v-sparq. at this time smithklan's members had begun to drift away from the hacker scene because of responsibilities such as college, careers, etc... smithklan had begun just hosting the member's personal sites along with the small security archive. smithklan had become more of a networking group at this time. a way for old friends to keep up with each other and reminisce about the old sk days. in 2001 the site was taken down because johnsmith didn't have the time to keep it up any longer, and only a picture displaying efnet #provoked, to let old friends and users know how to contact one another. the website stayed that way until 2005 and johnsmith didn't renew the domain for whatever reason and a squatter bought smithklan.com. johnsmith got it back in 2006 but it was lost again in 2007 until 2008 when bishun bought it back.
