- Founded in 1922, Smithville Telephone Company has grown to be Indiana’s largest independent telephone company. By 1969, Smithville Telephone Company had acquired 12 exchanges and by 1991 all exchanges were digital. A fiber optic ring was also put into service in 1991, linking together the Ellettsville COE, Stanford COE, Smithville COE and Indiana Bell Bloomington facilities. In 1998, Smithville Telephone expanded and began offering long distance service and in 2000 Smithville Telephone began offering DSL services. Smithville Digital emerged in 2004, offering the highest technological services for businesses and networking. Smithville Telephone is proud of their local connection and ability to offer progressive services.
