Title

State of Oregon: South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve

Description

The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve supports the informed management of the Coos estuary and watershed, providing a model for regional, national, and global coastal management.

The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (South Slough NERR) is a 4800 acre natural area located in the Coos estuary on the south coast of Oregon. The Reserve was designated in 1974 at the first unit of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, a network of 27 estuaries protected and managed for long-term research and education. The NERRS was established by Congress in 1972 as part of the Coastal Zone Management Act. Each reserve in the NERR system is managed as a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and a coastal state. For example, the South Slough NERR is receives policy guidance and funding from NOAA, while Oregon's Department of State Lands provides day-to-day management, facilities and staffing. South Slough reserve is governed by the South Slough NERR Management Commission, whose members are appointed by the governor.

Estuary habitats represented at the South Slough NERR include tidal channels, tidal and freshwater marshes, tideflats comprised of expanses of sand and mud streams and forests. The reserve manages research, education, and stewardship programs to improve scientific understanding of estuaries and improved public awareness of the benefits estuaries provide to society.
