- Set in 1946 in Paris, Almost Peaceful is the story of the workers at a tailor shop (all of them Jewish except for one) that are attempting to restart their lives after the occupation. The shop owner, Albert, and his wife Lea have hired more people than they need and they all have plenty of time to get to know each other in the shop since there isn’t enough work for all of them. Some of them have all of their family, some lost their parents, some their spouses and children. They’ve all got stories to tell from the war and are trying to regain some normalcy in their lives after the chaos of WWII. Some of them seek solace in prostitutes, some in solitude and others in their families. A quietly good film. My only complaint was one short “fairy tale” sequence when one of the tailors was telling a story to another tailor’s child and it went off in a direction that didn’t really fit with the rest of the film.
