Title

Spooky Records - Independent Record Label / Company from Melbourne Australia

Description

In 1999 the Australian music scene was a somewhat unforgiving place for the truly independent musician. There was plenty of good music going around in the smaller live venues of Melbourne but it was hardly a place where it was easy for bands to make and release this kind of music. So we thought fuck it, lets start a record label and see if we can not only make an impact on our hometown but take some of the fantastic raw talent that resides in our town to the rest of the world. From that day we naively started we have formed a strong bond with some of the finest bands and musicians Melbourne (and Australia) has to offer. As we take our vision to the rest of the world we discover that running this label is not only one hell of a ride but we hope it will go down in history as something unique in the Australian music industry.

The commercial music industry tends to get self-righteous about bootleggers, accusing them of putting inferior quality product on the market, and depriving the artist (or is it the record company?) of income and control over their recordings. Some bands are opposed to bootlegging, some tolerate it, some actively encourage and participate in it by allowing tapers access to the mixing desk or making unofficial recordings available on their websites. Some bootlegs are sold for unscrupulous prices, most are traded and passed amongst friends or online communities on a nonprofit basis. One thing's for sure, though -- if you're a diehard fan, a bootlegged rarity, outtake or live recording is pretty much impossible to resist.

Loki Lockwood of Spooky Records definitely counts himself in the pro-bootleg camp. "It's a recognition that people are passionate about the music", says Loki of the bootleg culture. "We have a massive MP3 page on the Spooky website, and we're not against downloading. It reminds you not to be so precious... let the music get out there."
