- Early Years. I was born in New York, and my first few years alive were spent in the arms of my family on the political campaign circuit. I was tugged from one event to the next, and frequently slept in a makeshift crib made of two chairs formed in a corner of a campaign event. My father won his congressional election, and we moved to Washington, DC in the early 1970’s. My formative years were very diverse. I experienced the duality of living in two residences a couple hundred miles a part. I attended an elementary school in Harlem during campaign season, and an all-Black school in DC. I then jumped from a predominately White elementary school to a mixed Catholic middle school, to an all-Black, all-boys high school for a year, then from an all-White Quaker high school for two years to an all-boys military academy for my last year of high school.
