Description

Dr Nick Barratt obtained his PhD from King's College, London in 1996 in medieval history. He can sight-read Latin and is familiar with palaeography (handwriting and abbreviation) from the twelfth century to the present day. He has worked for the BBC on the last three series of House Detectives, as well as numerous other programmes that include Omnibus, One Foot in the Past, Victorian Death, Horizon, People Detectives and Invasion. He has also given on-screen interviews on genealogy for News at Ten, London Tonight and The Learning Curve, and radio interviews for various local radio stations. He has written numerous articles on house history for The Times, Radio Times, Richmond Magazine and the The National Archive's journal Ancestors, and given several talks, presentations and document workshops on the subject. He recently published Tracing the History of Your House (TNO publications, 2001) and has written various academic articles on state finance in the middle ages, including two pieces for the English Historical Review, and has contributed chapters to S. Church (ed) King John: New Interpretations (Boydell, 1999) and W.M. Ormrod, M. Bonney and R. Bonney (eds) Crises, Revolutions and Self-Sustained Growth: Essays in European Fiscal History 1130-1830 (Shaun Tyas, 1999). He has worked as a specialist reader adviser at the The National Archive from 1996-2000, where he gained an in-depth knowledge of the The National Archive's holdings, and developed the academic induction archival training scheme for students visiting the The National Archive for the first time.

Sarah Barratt MA (Oxon) is a graduate of Trinity College Oxford (1994) and has worked as an independent researcher since 1999. She has assisted with the research for several BBC series, including House Detectives, Victorian Death, People Detectives and Invasion. She has also contributed several chapters to the book that accompanies Invasion. Her specialist knowledge includes genealogy, house history, media research and military and merchant navy service records, and she is familiar with a wide range of The National Archive documents.

Sticks Research Agency also uses other researchers from various specialist backgrounds to provide a service tailored to the needs of your project, such as Peter Day, who has over 30 years experience in regional and national newspapers; Kate Spiers (landscape history and regional architecture); Peter O'Donoghue (business history and heraldry); and several architectural historians.
