Title

Stone Boat Farm an affordable bed and breakfast nearby Stratton Mountain in Southern Vermont: Homepage

Description

For years my husband, Misha (our Siberian Husky) and I have taken weekend trips from New Haven, CT to Southern Vermont. When in the Green Mountains we camped and have enjoyed the many hiking trails and the great fly fishing of rivers, streams, lakes and ponds in the area. Then, in the spring of 2004 my husband and I saw a wonderful opportunity and purchased the 1830 farmhouse and former Jo-Mary motel. During the following months we did a number of renovations to the ca. 200 year old post and beam structures and opened the “Stone Boat Farm” as a bed and breakfast just in time for fall foliage. You may wonder why we called it the “Stone Boat Farm?” Well, during the last century simple sleds consisting of iron skids and wood were built here to transport boulders and stones for the farmers and homesteaders in the region, thus the name. The remains of these historic artifacts can be found in the woods around our farmhouse.

Our vision for the Stone Boat Farm is simple and straight forward. We want to provide outdoor enthusiasts and budget-minded travelers with an affordable place to relax after a day of outdoor activities. We are informal and want guests to feel right at home. When guests arrive they will find clean rooms and the refrigerator in the common room stocked with continental breakfast items. We encourage “self-catering!” Guests can help themselves to breakfast and are welcome to bring their own food for lunch or dinner, storing it in the guest refrigerator and heating it up in the microwave. During the warmer months, we encourage guests to bring food that they can barbeque on our outdoor patio adjacent to the brook and pond.

Besides operating the Stone Boat Farm as B &B, I work full-time at Yale University in New Haven, CT for an anthropological non-profit organization called “Human Relations Area Files (see www.yale.edu/hraf). My husband researches the late Neolithic period of China and is often busy working in China or conducting various research projects and writing his Ph.D. at Yale.
