Strauss History Our company was founded in 1919 in Newark, New Jersey by Herman Schlenger. R & S Auto, as it was then known, opened numerous outlets in NJ through the 1920's, 30's and 40's. In 1954 R & S Auto opened its first superstore at a highway location. A forerunner of today's stores, this was the first store to include a service garage and customer parking. In 1982 R & S Auto merged with Strauss stores from New York City. Strauss was founded in 1929 by I. M. Strauss who started with five stores and a warehouse in Brooklyn, NY on May 10, 1929. The acquisition of Strauss by Donald Schlenger, son of the R & S founder, resulted in forming the northeast's largest automotive aftermarket retailer with outlets in New Jersey and New York. The name was then officially changed to R & S Strauss. Four short years later, in September of 1986, R & S Strauss acquired the Penn Jersey auto stores in Philadelphia. This purchase extended the marketing scope of the company to metropolitan Philadelphia. In 1995 we began the process of changing our name to Strauss Discount Auto. Strauss Discount Auto stores can be found throughout New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Bethlehem Pennsylvania. This new identity celebrates the company's over 80 year history of success in the retail industry of the NY/Metro area. It also symbolizes an energy and commitment to forge ahead as a new company to expand and dominate the automotive aftermarket retail industry in the northeastern markets served by Strauss Discount Auto.
