edit The Problem
Subdomain pages currently need to be created manually. Doing so takes much longer than creating them automatically.
edit The Request
This is a request to expand a list of "almost-top-level" domains used by AboutUsBot, rather than a request to enhance the functionality of the bot.
In the long term, it would be good to allow subdomain pages to be created automatically.
In the short term, add the "almost-top-level" domains listed below to the list of those for which pages can be created automatically (such as .co.uk). --Iapetus 20:55, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
edit The Issue
If a DomainPage exists for Example.com, there's normally no need for a separate listing for www.example.com or ftp.example.com. This may be why the subdomain restriction was created in the first place. As well, many pages at free webhosts such as Tripod.com have little reference value, although some are useful.
edit Subdomains and "almost-top-level" domains
AboutUs already recognizes several domains such as on.ca and co.uk as “almost-top-level” domains which serve a geographical or category subdivision of a country so that AboutUsBot can automatically create entries for domains such as example.on.ca or example.co.uk I am not sure where the list of these "almost-top-level" domains is located, but I would like to propose some additions to it.
Many other “almost-top-level” domains are not recognized as such, which keeps articles on domains within these “almost-top-level” domains from being automatically created. For example, in Macdeonia, com.mk and net.mk are recognized, but gov.mk and org.mk are not.
edit Please add the following as “almost-top-level-domains”.
- k12.*.us if you can use a star that way - otherwise add the k12 subdomain for all U.S. states and territories, including DC), so that Mesd.k12.or.us can be automatically created
- In general, all the subnational com/org/net/gov/edu equivalents subordinate to geographic top level domains in countries where they are used, and all geographic subdivisions (such as bz.it) subordinate to geographic top level domains in countries where they are used.
and specific requests:
- edu.pk (so that Uol.edu.pk and other universities in Pakistan can be added)
- gov.et
- edu.et
- gc.ca
- nl.ca
- mb.ca
- nu.ca
- nic.in
- co.nr
- gov.nr
- ac.pa (so that Usma.ac.pa and other universities in Panama can be added)
- k12.ca.us
- k12.ak.us
- k12.or.us
- state.ak.us
- Gov.mk
- Org.mk
- bz.it (and other geographical divisions of Italy)
- Gob.mx
- bois-des-filion.qc.ca (so that ville.bois-des-filion.qc.ca can be added)
edit Free Webhosts
I am not certain that AboutUs should automatically create domain pages for sites such as example.tripod.com, but this is a separate issue from whether government agencies or universities in countries outside the United States should be automatically added. --Iapetus 20:55, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
