The Afrocentric Experience

The Afrocentric Experience offers historical facts, commentary and information from an Afrocentric perspective. This web site was created and is maintained by yours truly Obi Okara a.k.a Everton 'Swagga' Powell, who is a Certified Web Site Developer and a Mechanical Engineer. I was born and raised in the lovely federation of St. Kitts Nevis and migrated to USA to attend college. There at the prestigious Florida A&M University in Tallahassee Florida I acquired a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While working in corporate America I fell in-love with the Internet and its endless possibilities. I immediately saw it as a tool that should be put to good use spreading positive information about the African Experience through out the Diaspora.
It occurred to me, that apart from the annual Black History celebrations, this type of information has not been given a permanent place in the curriculum of instruction and information that is presented to people of African ancestry on a daily basis. For a long time, the absence of an institutionalized medium for transmitting this information on a continuous basis has been my nagging concern. As a result, in December of 1997, I created the site as measure to compensate for the fact that information relative to people of African ancestry was not being provided in a continuous manner, consistent with any sort of institutionalized format. In effect, this was my response to what I thought was a pervasive problem with extensive and adverse effects. After all, it is information that is instrumental to the growth and development of African people and critical to the liberation of the mind. I do believe that the dissemination of Afrocentric information relative to the experience of African peoples, is instrumental to the development of our societies and people, and is of paramount importance in both our domestic affairs and global significance.
I have always hoped that the information would reach and have a constructive impact on the greater masses of people. In the first year of existence the web site received 105 000 pages viewed and over 1 million pages viewed during the second year. Now today that number has grown exponentially and is increasing constantly. The Afrocentric Experience has thousands of members on its discussion forum and email list. All this was achieved without any formal funding or advertising, which I think is a great achievement. Given the positive responses I have received from many of the visitors to the site, I would conclude that the site has been well received. However, I am not convinced that it has reached the greater masses of people who may benefit. It is this concern which inspired the idea to expand the scope of the site. And, it is with this objective in mind that I am requesting your assistance. I am inviting you to tell a friend about this site and/or put a link on your web site. Also I am looking for sponsors, as it can be a very expensive and time consuming venture to build and maintain a web site daily all by myself.
