- FACT: College Bookstores make most of their profits from the buying and selling of used books. They typically pay you anywhere from 30-50% of the new price for your used book (sometimes even less than that) and turn around and sell it at 75% or more of the new price. If you think I am kidding, compare the prices for the new and used book you just bought. So they are getting paid about 40% of the new book price in profits. Now, running a brick-and-mortar bookstore costs money. Lease/rent, employee's salaries, and insurance are just a few of their expenses. And of course, the owners need to make a little six-figure salary, too. But, students pay for all of this.
