The town of Nong Khai is the capital of the province of NongKhai. Situated 630 km north east of Bangkok on the banks of the Mekong river in northeast Thailand (Isaan), Nong Khai province has a total area of 7,332.3 square kilometers and an average elevation of 365 meters above sea level
The provincial seal shows a pond with bamboo around it. The bamboo symbolizes stability, glory and continuity for the peaceful and fertile land. The provincial tree is the tamalan or Burma pallisander.
The province changed ownership often throughout history. At one time being part of the Laotian kingdom of Lan Xang and another time being part of the Thai kingdom of Ayutthaya. The people of Nong khai, are fiercely proud of their heritage and historic links with their neighbours in Laos.
