As the newspaper grew it underwent several changes in name and ownership until 1965, when the News was acquired by the E.W. Scripps Company.
The News' circulation area includes Martin and St. Lucie counties, in a section of southeastern Florida known as the Treasure Coast. In fact, as a news source it dominates the southern half of this fast-growing area, an area with a diverse and demanding readership. While offering a comprehensive package of world, national and state coverage, the News emphasizes local and area material compiled by a staff that has earned numerous state and national awards.
The two weekly papers merged in 1920 and became the News Tribune. The newspaper continued to grow with the area and became a daily after 1926.
