Official Team20 Website

Description

There are many reasons to describe why each year Team20 members return, and newer members find there place within our growing community. Many outside any robotics club view those inside as "geeks, nerds...etc" yet the pre-college students of Shenendehowa high school fall under almost every physical, social, and mental category around our region. The team is a Comprehensive collection of students looking to further there abilities in such areas as mechanics, programming, website design, animation, art, photography, and much much more. Being part of the team allows for kids at any level in life, to gain the skills they need to further there education after high school, including such important life skills as organization, team work, planning, and working towards deadlines. Being in team20 is more than just another high school club, its a once in a lifetime experience that challenges your way of thinking and jumpstarts your future by giving you hands on examples of some of the most respected jobs in society.

Each year our team, along with over 1100 others around the world, work towards making a remote controlled robot to compete in the annual First Robotics Challenge, to learn more about this years game you can view there website at Http://www.usfirst.org. A brief overview of how the competition works is as follows. Each year in the beginning of January NASA hosts a broadcast explaining how the game will be played, what task(s) the robot has to do, and the rules behind game play. We are given 6 weeks to fully design and fabricate a fully functional robot that we feel will play its best when the time comes for competition. Also in this six week period other areas of the competition are worked upon. Each year a 30 second animation is created to compete with the animations done by other teams, we must get sponsors and publications to let the public know of our actions, a replica field is created in order to test our robot, and many more projects are done to get us as close as possible to winning a handful of awards eligible at the competition. Each group will be explained in detail as you further read.

Over 60 students each year work with a handful of mentors in each area of the Robotics program. Our Mentors are a range of Teachers, Engineers, and parents that specialize in areas such as Mechanics, programming, architecture, etc. These Mentors work with students to give them an understanding of how real-life engineers work together, and they guide the students towards the creation of the robots each year. The Mentors are key in helping students work out problems in there groups, and problems they may face in everyday life. "Our team is a family, the mentors are the parents guiding students towards not only a productive year of robotics, but also towards creating a learning environment where they can gain important life skills."
