Substance Induced Mood Disorder - WebHealth
Description
Excerpted from the website description:
- Substance induced mood disorders are mood disorders that were caused either by substance abuse of street drugs or as a side effect of prescription drugs. Certain drugs have this effect as a known side effect. For instance ritalin is known to have this side effect, so do steroids as a group. Another mechanism of inducing a substance induced mood disorder is from withdrawal of a substance. Typically this is the case with manic depression symptoms from alcohol withdrawal, cocaine withrawal or amphetamine withdrawal. Things can really get complicated when the patient takes a drug overdose while in the process of a depressive phase from a substance induced mood disorder. During treatment smaller doses of SSRI antidepressants may have to be used along with cognitive therapy and behavioral modification. A brief write-up of crystal meth symptoms and treatment is provided.
